PRIGOZHIN EVERYTHING? HOW THE DEATH OF THE HEAD OF WAGNER STRENGTHENED PUTIN’S AUTHORITY

In the Tver region (Russia) on August 23, a Russian plane crashed. It allegedly belongs to the founder of the private military company PMC “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin. On board the plane at the time of the crash were tentatively eight people among whom Eugene himself and commanders. All of them died.

The business jet was traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg and crashed near the village of Kuzhenkino. According to eyewitnesses, two explosions sounded, after which the aircraft RA-02795 sharply began to fall. The photos published after the fire was extinguished in the place where the plane went down also show holes that could have been left by the Russian air defense system.

Recall, that in late June 2023, the founder of PMC “Wagner” Evgeny Prigozhin started a military mutiny on the territory of Russia. The reason was the shelling of the rear camps of the “Wagnerites” by the Russian regular army.

Then Prigozhin’s mercenaries captured Rostov-on-Don and Voronezh almost without a fight, after which they headed towards Moscow. Without entering the capital Prigozhin held talks with the self-proclaimed president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and stopped the riot. As it later turned out, the head of Wagner was sent to Belarus and the criminal cases about the coup were closed. But everyone realized that closing the issue of the mutiny was only a matter of time, as well as the life of its initiator.

Putin calculatedly waited and struck at a moment when Prigozhin was vulnerable, and thus tried to demonstrate to the Russians, including the regular army, that he would not forgive rebels. Moreover, analysts are certain that such a move is a public attempt by Putin to resume his dominance in the arena and an act of quiet revenge for the worldwide humiliation directed at the Russian president and the Defense Ministry.
