“I am being kept in inhumane conditions”: life in a colony has been made harsher for an activist from Central Asia

The father of political prisoner Zhumasapar Dadebaev, Egenmurat, announced a significant deterioration in the conditions of the activist’s detention behind bars. This happened after he was transferred to the maximum security colony KIN-11 in Navoi on April 2, 2024 due to alleged violations on the part of the prisoner. Before this, the activist served his sentence in the general regime colony KIN-3 in Karshi.

Currently, the activist’s father has already sent a corresponding letter to the Ombudsman with a request to provide assistance and provide his son with better conditions.

Let us remind you that Dadebaev is an ethnic Turkmen from Karakalpakstan. In 2016, the National Security Service of Uzbekistan tried to recruit a man to work abroad, but he managed to leave the country. In 2018, while living in Turkey, Dadebaev became involved in public activities, voicing on social networks problems related to the situation in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Of course, he kept in touch with activists and himself participated in public events.

As it later turned out, Uzbekistan put Zhumasapar on the international wanted list for allegedly storing files with religious sermons by Abduvali-kori, Obida-kori, Rafik-kori and others (according to the official version) on his personal tablet in his parents’ house at the end of 2016. The activist denied the accusation in court.

On January 10, 2022, Dadebaev was detained in Turkey, prohibiting contact with his lawyer. Two days later, contrary to the decision of the Turkish court, the activist was deported to Uzbekistan, accompanied by two Turkish intelligence officers. The activist was also required to record a video message to the population of Karakalpakstan with a call not to go to rallies, and in return he would be released. However, they did not keep their promise, and moreover, in April they “complicated the matter” by adding new episodes related to the publication of Dadebaev’s speeches on social networks in the period from 2019 to 2021.

Due to Dadebaev’s criticism on social networks regarding Mirziyoyev and support for speeches for the sovereignty of Karakalpakstan, on August 10, 2022, the Mirzo-Ulugbek District Court of Tashkent sentenced the activist to 12 years in a general regime colony.
